Will the First Minister outline the new Government's position on decolonisation in Welsh museums?

Answered by Trefnydd, Chief Whip and Cabinet Minister for Culture and Sport | Answered on 28/05/2026

This Government brings a renewed focus on culture and history and is committed to strengthening ownership of Welsh heritage. We will invest in our cultural bodies to ensure that our collections serve and reflect the people of Wales and our identity.

Equality of access to the arts, culture and sport for people of all ages, backgrounds and abilities will be a priority and our museum sector is integral to the success of this.

As outlined in the 2026 manifesto, we are determined to keep the Anti-Racist Wales Action Plan under review, to strengthen its delivery and impact and retaining a focus on the decolonisation of museum collections to rebalance perspectives, creating inclusive spaces and increasing engagement and participation among all people across Wales. We expect museums to use guidance such as the Museums Association’s Supporting Decolonisation in Museums and its Code of Ethics when undertaking this work.
