Will the Cabinet Secretary provide an update on the guidance provided to accident and emergency departments regarding patients signing themselves out of hospital due to long waits?
Our Quality Statement for Care in Emergency Departments sets the outcomes and standards people can expect in emergency departments. This includes timely triage and assessment based on clinical priority as well as an environment which prioritises the safeguarding of adults and children.
In July 2025, NHS Wales guidance was issued outlining principles for developing local policies, procedures, and processes that promote timely identification, risk assessment, and appropriate safeguarding action for people who have missed appointments or are unable to gain access to healthcare visits.
While there may be legitimate reasons for this happening, persistent or unexplained non-attendance must prompt professional curiosity, reflection, and appropriate safeguarding responses.
The guidance emphasises that these principles are equally applicable to people who do not wait for assessment, care or treatment within emergency departments.
