How many empty homes have been brought back into usable housing stock in the past ten years in Wales?

Answered by Cabinet Secretary for Housing and Local Government | Answered on 05/12/2024

We do not hold data on the number of empty homes brought back in to use over the last ten years, however the following schemes, all established since 2020, are helping to bring empty homes back in to use as follows:

Transforming Towns  - 2,300 residential homes brought back into use since the start of the Programme in 2020, with 400 of these coming from the Transforming Towns Loans scheme and 1,900 from the Property Loans scheme.

Transitional Accommodation Capital Programme -340 properties were brought back into use as homes under the programme in 2022-23, with a further 240 in the last financial year.

Land and Buildings Development Fund –131 properties brought back into use since it began in 2021. 123 of those were empty properties purchased and renovated using LBDF funds by local authorities, plus 8 empty properties renovated that were owned by an RSL.

Leasing Scheme Wales – 280 properties have been signed up to the scheme since its establishment in 2022. Around 60% of these properties had previously been empty for 6 months or more,

Empty Homes Grant - 942 valid applications for the scheme, as well as 143 properties completed to date – with all category 1 hazards removed and brought back into use as homes, with work to bring a number of other homes in progress and due for completion this year.
