Will the Minister provide a breakdown of the latest key stage 2 and 3 results for Bridgend, Swansea and Neath Port Talbot local authorities, by core subject, gender and eligibility for free school meals?

Answered by Minister for Education and the Welsh Language | Answered on 03/03/2023

Since 2018, we have not published any teacher assessment data at a sub-national level. This approach has been taken to refocus assessment back to its primary purpose of supporting young people’s learning and to discuss this with their parents and carers.

The decision not to publish this information was subject to a full consultation with stakeholders and a summary of the outcome can be found here.

This change has helped shift the focus of assessment back to informing better teaching and learning, addressing some of the previous unintended consequences arising from its use in school accountability.

National level Key Stage 2 and 3 data, split by subject, gender and eligibility for free school meals is available at StatsWales.

Note that teacher assessment data was not collected in 2020 or 2021 because of disruption caused by coronavirus.  Collection was resumed in 2022 for Key Stage 3 only, following a decision to remove end of Foundation Phase and Key Stage 2 assessments one year prior to the roll out of Curriculum for Wales.  This decision was made to create space for practitioners to prepare their new curriculum and assessment arrangements and create flexibility for them to plan a smoother transition for learners.  It was subject to a full consultation with stakeholders and the outcome can be found here.
