Will the Minister outline the original business case for the construction of the Helipad at Prince Charles Hospital in Merthyr Tydfil?

Answered by Minister for Health and Social Services | Answered on 24/10/2019

In December 2013, Welsh Government approved an outline business case from Cwm Taf Morgannwg University Health Board for a major refurbishment of the Prince Charles Hospital in Merthyr. The business case included the repositioning of the existing helipad to a new site adjacent to the Emergency Department.

In 2018, the Health Board was advised of a change to both the operator and aircraft used for Search and Rescue (SAR) services. This change to a commercial operator and the use of heavier aircraft required a comprehensive review of the facilities and environs resulting in additional requirements to the site in order that the new PCH pad could safely support both air ambulance and SAR services.

Subsequently, the Health Board has been required to undertake further landscaping around the site. A planning application for this has been submitted for consideration. The Health Board have stated that once the necessary consents are secured it will undertake the necessary works.

The Health Board has maintained the existing helipad to ensure the continuity of service provision.
