How many Welsh patients currently receive inpatient mental health support in hospitals in England and how many of these placements are provided by Cygnet Healthcare?

We remain committed to ensure that people requiring inpatient care should receive this as close to home as possible. However, there will be times when people requiring high needs care will need to be cared for at a very specialist centres in England, which provide services for the whole of the UK.

Placements under the National Collaborative Framework in healthcare settings outside Wales are overseen by the NHS Wales Quality Assurance Improvement Team (QAIT), the operational team of the NHS Wales Collaborative Commissioning Unit.

QAIT have confirmed that:

  • There are 95 Welsh inpatients placed in England under the Framework (90 Adults and 5 young persons in CAMHS).
  • 8 adults and 2 young people are placed in Cygnet facilities in England.
  • There are also 23 Adults placed in Cygnet facilities within Wales.

We have robust arrangements in place to ensure the quality and safety of specialist mental inpatient settings. This includes making placements via the national framework contract to place individuals in suitable independent facilities.

QAIT provides assurance to Health Boards and Welsh Health Specialised Services Committee (WHSSC) that National Collaborative Framework services are being provided in safe and high quality environments.
