What percentage of people accessing pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) in Wales are from black, Asian and minority ethnic communities?

Answered by Minister for Health and Social Services | Answered on 27/06/2019

Pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) has been provided by NHS Wales for almost two years and is fully embedded in service provision. Over 1,000 people have accessed PrEP during this time and there have been no new cases of HIV in this cohort. I am pleased to say that new cases of HIV remain firmly on a downward trend in Wales. I will update Members further as soon as new data is available.

The number of people accessing PrEP from black, Asian and minority ethnic communities is as follows:

Table 1: Number of people accessing PrEP by ethnicity. Wales, 1st July 2017 - 31st March 2019

Ethnicity Number %
Asian (Asian Bangladeshi / Chinese / Indian / Pakistani / Other) <15 <1.5
Black (Black African / Caribbean / Other) <10 <1.0
Mixed <15 <1.5
White (White British / Irish / Other) 911 90.3
Any other 21 2.1
Unknown / Not stated 43 4.3
TOTAL 1009 100.0
