OPIN-2022-0279 Coeliac UK’s Awareness Week (9-15 May 2022) (e) Tabled on 03/05/2022

This Senedd:

1. Welcomes Coeliac UK’s Awareness Week (9-15 May).

2. Recognises that coeliac disease is a serious autoimmune condition affecting 1 in 100 people.

3. Expresses concern that in Wales, two thirds of those with coeliac disease (~20,000) remain undiagnosed, leaving them potentially at risk of long-term complications (e.g osteoperosis, neurological dysfunction, fertility problems and, in rare cases, small bowel cancer).

4. Encourages those experiencing common symptoms such as tiredness, sickness, diarrhoea, constipation and nutritional deficiencies to visit www.isitcoeliacdisease.org.uk.

5. Calls on GPs to have a low threshold for testing for coeliac disease.

6. Encourages the Welsh Government to commit to development of a coeliac pathway.
