OPIN-2019-0141 Royal Society of Chemistry's ‘Elements in Danger’ campaign (e) Tabled on 09/10/2019

This Assembly:

1. Welcomes the Royal Society of Chemistry’s 'Elements in Danger' campaign raising awareness of rare elements contained in unused electrical devices.

2. Understands there are an estimated 40 million unused gadgets in UK homes, that these electronic devices contain precious elements that could run out in the next century, and that most households have no plans to recycle them.

3. Acknowledges a lack of infrastructure to extract these elements and a need for research & development investment to improve recycling.

4. Calls on the Welsh and UK Governments to work in partnership with others towards sustainability goals for rare elements.
