Questions For - Cabinet Secretary for Education
Will the Cabinet Secretary make a statement on the role of further education in supporting skills development and economic growth in Swansea?
Further education plays a vital role in the Swansea bay regional economy. Last year, Coleg Sir Gâr, Pembrokeshire College, Gower College Swansea, and the NPTC group worked together to deliver over 6,700 apprenticeships, enrolled almost 13,000 full-time learners, and invested over £14 million in occupational qualifications.
What safeguarding training is the Welsh Government providing to schools and teachers to protect children from the adverse effects of generative and chatbot AI?
This year, we have published generative AI guidance and training for schools, which includes advice on the potential influence and impact of chatbots. These resources support schools with educating and safeguarding their learners from detrimental impacts of this technology. These are available on the 'Keeping safe online' area of Hwb.
How does the Cabinet Secretary plan to improve school standards for the remainder of this Senedd?
I have set out my priorities for improving educational standards—improving attendance and delivering sustained improvement in educational attainment in literacy and numeracy so that every learner can fulfil their potential, across all ability groups and whatever challenges face them.
Will the Welsh Government provide an update on progress towards establishing a sustainable model for supply teaching across Wales?
We are working with partners to establish a sustainable model for supply teaching as part of the development of the strategic education workforce plan.
Questions For - Cabinet Secretary for Housing and Local Government
What support is the Welsh Government offering to residents concerned about the slow progress of remediation works to their buildings in the wake of the 2017 Grenfell tragedy?
The Welsh building safety programme guarantees there is a route to remediation for all buildings 11m and over with fire safety issues. We remain committed to identifying and unblocking all barriers to progress. Officials meet regularly with leaseholders to ensure support is being provided.
Will the Cabinet Secretary make a statement on housing needs in Carmarthen West and South Pembrokeshire?
Local authorities are required to undertake an assessment of housing need to inform a detailed local understanding. This also informs local development plans and social housing grant investment. Last financial year alone, I approved 10 social housing grants schemes across Carmarthenshire and Pembrokeshire, which is supporting the delivery of almost 400 homes, to meet need.
What is the Welsh Government doing to encourage relationships between elected councillors and paid officers that enable local authorities to provide the best possible service for the population they serve?
Local government operates within a framework of codes and standards that clearly outline the expected behaviours of both elected members and officers. By treating each other with dignity and courtesy, members and officers can foster a positive working environment that supports effective decision making and service delivery.
