What steps is the Welsh Government taking to consider the environment as part of the development of the Celtic Freeport?

Answered by Cabinet Secretary for Economy, Energy and Welsh Language | Answered on 07/05/2024

The prospective Welsh Freeports, including Celtic, are currently developing business cases to obtain Government approval for designated tax sites and release of capital funding.

Celtic’s main proposals are focussed around creating a green investment and innovation corridor to help drive major inward investment, future skills development, and national decarbonisation.  These proposals are being appraised by UK and Welsh Government officials.

Assessment also includes checking whether proposals will comply with regulations on air and water quality, waste and chemicals, as well as mitigation of impacts on protected species and sites. The business case also includes a detailed decarbonisation / net zero plan.
