Following team treatment for enlarged benign prostate tumours receiving NICE approval and being available in England, when will this treatment be available in Wales?

Answered by Cabinet Secretary for Health and Social Services | Answered on 26/11/2018

Steam treatment for enlarged prostate has recently been considered as being appropriate for treatment of benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) by NICE on 21 August 2018. NICE have suggested that for certain patients that this treatment may be considered alongside all other available treatments. This means it is now a recommended treatment for BPH on the NHS. However this does not mean it is available routinely across the NHS. It is dependent on each NHS trust and the treatments they decide to offer.

This treatment is not currently available from the NHS in Wales. Health boards in Wales are evaluating the available evidence concerning this treatment and will consider how it compares with existing procedures available from the NHS in Wales. It is currently available in a small number of NHS trusts in England.
