National Assembly for Wales

Further to WAQ76573, will the Cabinet Secretary provide a breakdown of permanent and fixed term exclusions in primary and secondary schools for all pupils; pupils with special educational needs; and looked after children; in each of Wales's local authorities?

Answered by Cabinet Secretary for Education Answered on 18/06/2018

The information requested is in the ten tables below. Figures greater than zero but fewer than 5 have been suppressed to protect the confidentiality of data about individual pupils. These are denoted by an asterisk.

For permanent exclusions, the small numbers (between zero and five) mean that full tables cannot be provided without risk of identifying individual pupils. A single table has been provided giving the overall number of permanent exclusions in maintained primary and secondary schools in Wales. No information on permanent exclusions from maintained middle, special schools and pupil referral units in Wales has been given, as the total numbers are too small to show (between zero and five).

Tables 7 to 10 refer to the number of exclusions of children who had cases open on 31 March and had been open for at least the previous three months. Due to the small numbers of permanent exclusions for looked after children, no further breakdown of permanent exclusions has been given.
