Will the Cabinet Secretary confirm how many recorded intensive poultry units in Wales recorded non-compliance during the latest inspection period (2017-18), and state how enforcement will be taken against repeat offenders?

Answered by Cabinet Secretary for Energy, Planning and Rural Affairs | Answered on 01/05/2018

Larger intensive poultry units with 40,000 or more poultry places are closely regulated by Natural Resources Wales (NRW) under the environmental permitting regime in accordance with the requirements of the Industrial Emissions Directive.

The Food Standards Agency is responsible for the enforcement of food hygiene standards at slaughterhouses and manages the health and welfare monitoring system applied at the slaughterhouse, when the broilers are presented for slaughter.

The Animal and Plant Health Agency also inspects broiler premises in Wales.

These bodies are responsible for maintaining records of non-compliance and any action taken as a result. The information can be obtained from these bodies on request.
